Vampire Diaries fans were treated to an unpleasant shock in the mid-season finale when Damon (Ian Somerhalder) ended things with Elena (Nina Dobrev) over his guilt-ridden past (and present and future). Is Delena really over? Executive producer Caroline Dries spoke to TV Guide about the couple’s future!
"I wouldn't say it's a reset of the triangle," Caroline said. (Phew!) "What the show does well is that it doesn't just make rash decisions with people that causes them to just stop loving the people they love. Damon and Elena have a deep-rooted love for each other and you can't just turn your back on that. Elena will always feel that for Damon even if they fight or [break up]. But we will see in future episodes that there is a huge strain in their relationship, bigger than them in a way."
So, no? It sounds like these two will stay apart for a bit, but will still be the triangle’s main romantic focus — i.e. Elena is still in love with Damon, not Stefan (Paul Wesley). For now. We know that Damon will have some bad influence in the form of Enzo as “the devil on Damon’s shoulder.” Will these two be buddies again? We kind of hope so — even if it causes some stress to the Delena relationship. These former prison buds have far too much chemistry and way too interesting of a backstory to brush aside after two episodes. Also, we’re still pulling for that shirtless fight scene.
