- The Vampire Diaries - recap: A Toast to Katherine
The Vampire Diaries'
100th episode was pretty much everything you could ask for: Sentimental
but not saccharine, twist-filled, and the bearer of the gift that was
Caroline and Klaus having sex. I watched this episode live with my
colleague Samantha Highfill in the EW offices, and we screamed so loudly
during that scene that a colleague we didn't realize was still around
actually came to see if we were okay. Momentarily mortified, we
recovered and rewound to watch it another two times. Let's dig in.
We opened with a flashback to Bulgaria in 1490, when Katerina had her
baby and her father took it away before she could even hold it.
Actually, this was Katherine's life flashing before her eyes because she
was really in the hospital having her heart shocked after a heart
attack. As Stefan informed Nadia when she showed up there, Katherine
wasn't expected to last the day, so he wanted to take her home to
Salvatore Mansion to die in peace. Not gonna happen, Stefan, but it was a
nice thought.
Damon and Elena were each sulking after their breakup: Damon was
face-down on the bar at the Grill when Matt and Jeremy found him, while
Elena was still in bed when Bonnie and a giddy Caroline (who'd memorized
Elena's breakup play-by-play) came in with her delicious-looking
"breakup breakfast." The boys beat the girls to the Mansion and started
the bourbon-fueled drinking game
without them: You think of the worst thing Katherine ever did to you,
toast to the glory of her impending death, and then remember something
even worse and repeat. It was a clever, quippy way to relive the best
(meaning: worst) of Katherine Pierce. Plus, we got to hear Damon say the
phrases "double doozy" and "group shot!"
