Klaus in The Vampire Diaries Season 5 promo

Sometimes, loves, you have to take the good with the bad and The Vampire Diaries Season 5 promo for 2014 (titled “Defining Actions”) is a fine example of that. The new trailer gives us a taste of what’s to come — essentially a mix of emotional highs and lows — and we are currently freaking out because of it.
Is Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) on her deathbed? Yes, and it sucks big-time because seeing the world’s sassiest vampire all weak and feeble is too much for us to bear. Even though she was a bitch for most it, her 500 year journey is full of entertaining and unforgettable moments. At least she has a friend in Stefan (Paul Wesley) who tries his best to help her during this terrifying ordeal. That has to count for something, right?
As for Damon (Ian Somerhalder), is he bad again? It certainly seems that way, and it hurts our hearts to see him suffering so much after his break-up with Elena (which, mind you, he only did because he didn’t feel like he was good enough for her and didn’t want her to change as an individual by dating him). “I want to go back in time, fix every awful thing I’ve ever done but I can’t take any of that back,” he says with sorrowful eyes. Before you tear up over his admission of guilt though please be aware that he’s spotted snapping Matt Donovan’s (Zach Roerig) neck. That is NOT okay, dude!
Luckily there are two silver linings is this whole intense and depressing preview trailer. The first is when Stefan (Paul Wesley) supports his brother by providing Elena with some heartrendering advice: “He’s only pushing you away because he hates himself. You never gave up on me so don’t give up on him.” (Aww.Team Salvatore for life!) The second bright spot in the promo comes in the form of a lovely salutation: “Hello, Caroline.” KLAUS RETURNS TO MYSTIC FALLS! (Somebody pinch us. Are we still alive? BRB. Passing out now.)
Now we already knew Joseph Morgan (who know stars on TVD’s spin-off, The Originals) was due for an appearance– but seeing him a clip of him popping up makes us feel much better. Will he specifically return for TVD’S 100th episode? We have no clue, but the time being we can enjoy the simple pleasures in life a.k.a. that Klaus is back and is once again laying his charm on thick on Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola). “I did a bad thing,” she’s heard telling Elena. (Hmm. Does it have anything to do with these spoilers?)
